If you would have asked me 5 years ago if I though If you would have asked me 5 years ago if I thought I would ever return to creating collage based print ads for Volcom I probably would have spit my beer out laughing. But here we are. @mareebasse40 and @hgrolo approached me to put together an old school layout celebrating my longtime amigo @gonyzubizarreta ´s 27 (!) years of being a team rider - I was more than willing to oblige. Also they let me do what I used to do and eschewed that rebrand schmeebrand stuff that I don’t think anyone liked. Plus it’s a print ad, which seems like such a rare bird these days, and nonetheless in @wastedtalentintl who are also friends and procurers of good taste. So yeah, I’m fucken stoked to bust out the x-acto blades and spray paint once again. Thanks for the opportunity! @volcom_eu

Our last phone conversation two weeks ago was both cathartic and comedic, sad and sarcastic, fucked up and funny, just as all of our conversations were. You were a man among men, an athletic and intelligent beast who could out swim a pack of Orcas and shut people down instantly with only a few words. You had the knack to be in the spot on almost every wave, and god damn if the subject was going to puss out, you let them know in-depth that they fucked up. You were the ultimate bullshit detector, always spot on with your comments and your rants were legendary. You had an eye for framing shots that not many could fathom. A true artist. We had some wild adventures together over the years; Arctic Challenge, Quik Cup madness, Portugal, Basque Country missions, Copenhagen/Malmo, Munich, Lanzarote, Marseille, and many more that I can’t recall yet can’t forget simultaneously. The time we got waved through a CRS checkpoint on the way to Marseille with the Basque equivalent of the Cannabis Cup happening in the back of the van 🤣. That one time we evaded the cops in Puerto Del Carmen and drove across the island on dirt roads lights off and only the full moon lighting our way 😲. We had our own lingo and inside jokes only a few understood ("Make a Wan" "I ain’t your Blacky, Pinky!" "That’s Fucktarded" "Goddamn Barn Door!" "Portugal Radicaaaal!") and used a shit ton of Basque adjectives "Joderrrr!" "Ostiaa!" "Diosh!" Long drives with you were always a treat, never a chore. Great conversations. Our classic debate (or argument if we were six beers deep) was the fact you loved Slater and I thought he was an egoistic pizza chucking star who hung around too long. I could keep typing forever. I’m gonna miss you intensely, we all are. I’m just glad we spoke one last time at length - and I got to tell you that I love you and to never forget that. Sending love to Heidi and Kai. See you on the other side my friend. ❤️
